Being a Man in New Zealand Today by Richard Dawson
Manhood has been under constant attack for several decades now and, to a certain extent, not without reason. But God has a better plan and a surer future for men.
I like to sum up this plan with the letters M-A-N. These stand for Making A Name. God’s plan is that our lives be spent making a name - first for God, then for those we are given responsibility for, and finally for ourselves.
How do we do this? The word ‘Making’ reminds us that God has put us on this earth to be constructive and not destructive. It is easy to be destructive and to turn our natural strength and energy into creating chaos for others and for ourselves. God calls men to learn to turn those energies towards positive outcomes, even if it means being misunderstood or considered weak by others. We need to become co-creators with God at every opportunity.
The letter ‘A’ reminds me that God has given me just one life in which to make a name. I need to treasure every opportunity that one life gives me. I need to treasure each moment of that single life and I need to treasure each experience in that one life, even some of the bad experiences. God is a God of second chances but not of second lives. We need to make the most of the life God has given us.
Finally the word ‘Name’ reminds me that I am called to present God’s Name to the world through my actions.Manhood is about much more than just me. It’s about giving shelter and shoulder to those God has called me to care for. Just as Christ gave His life for the world, so our calling is to give our lives for those God has given us – our wives, families, business partners, friends and fellow Christians.
So go ahead. Be the MAN God has called you to be.
